02 July 2025, Perth - The Energy Policy WA (EPWA), led by Ms. Sarah Woenne, Director for Electricity Networks and Customer Participation, presented an in-depth briefing on 02 July 2025 for Philippine Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Antonio Morales, on Western Australia’s unique energy landscape as part of the Ambassador’s official visit to WA. EPWA highlighted opportunities for energy cooperation with the Philippines, particularly in decentralized systems, renewable integration, and off-grid innovation.
In line with its transition to a low-emissions future, WA has committed to an 80% reduction in state emissions by 2030, anchored by the planned retirement of all state-owned coal-fired power stations. The state has launched PoweringWA, a dedicated vehicle to accelerate renewable energy investment and grid integration, and has already achieved 40% renewable energy generation on its primary grid.
Ambassador Morales discussed that the Philippines, which is targeting a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, shares many of the logistical and infrastructure challenges that WA has addressed through innovation. Noting WA’s global leadership in remote energy systems, Ambassador Morales raised potential partnership in strengthening off-grid system management, especially for island and rural electrification, as well as in upskilling of Filipino workers in areas such as energy system planning, microgrid operation, battery integration, and renewable energy deployment.
Both parties acknowledged the importance of continued dialogue to explore joint projects and knowledge-sharing platforms. These efforts can help advance the clean energy transition while improving energy security, reliability, and access across remote communities in both WA and the Philippines. - END
