02 July 2025, Perth - Philippine Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Antonio A. Morales met with Murdoch University Deputy Vice Chancellor of Education Don Klinger, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement Simon McKirdy and Director for Strategic Partnerships Susan Marie on 02 July 2025. The officials discussed Murdoch University’s expanding engagement with the Philippines, particularly in biosecurity, green mining, and education collaboration.
Murdoch University is working closely with the Department of Agriculture, the University of the Philippines, and international partners on the proposed establishment of the Southeast Asia Biosecurity Institute (SABI) in the Philippines to build regional capacity in plant, livestock, and fisheries biosecurity.
Murdoch University will also deliver green mining training sessions in the Philippines this October 2025 to support the Philippines in advancing sustainable practices in the extractives sector.
Ambassador Morales welcomed Murdoch University’s contributions in addressing critical Philippine development priorities and reaffirmed the Embassy’s support in moving key initiatives forward.
Murdoch University was established in 1973 and now has more than 21,000 students and 1,700 staff across campuses in Perth, Singapore and Dubai. It has established four interdisciplinary research institutes aligned with each of its major research strengths in food, health, the environment and First Nations knowledges.
Australia is a top destination for Filipino students, with nearly 3,900 Filipinos enrolled in Western Australia in 2024, making them the fifth-largest international student cohort in the state. - END
