22 May 2025, CAIRNS – Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio A. Morales met with the Filipino community in Cairns on 22 May 2025. The townhall meeting, which was held at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, was attended by more than 50 Filipino community leaders and entrepreneurs.
Ambassador Morales was warmly welcomed by Cairns Mayor Amy Eden. In her welcome remarks, expressed her appreciation to the Filipino community for their contribution to the economy and the cultural vibrancy of their city, as well as for bringing with them the Filipino traits of kindness, generosity and hospitality.
In his message, Ambassador Morales highlighted that the meeting coincided with the commemoration of Philippines-Australia Friendship Day which is celebrated every 22nd day of May. He expressed his eagerness to continue the very important work of strengthening the Strategic Partnership between the Philippines and Australia and their long and historic relationship. He said that this challenging task is made easier with the valuable support of the Filipino community all over Australia and how they all have elevated the profile and pride of the Philippines through their remarkable contributions each in their own way.
Ambassador Morales echoed what President Ferdinand R. Marcos said during his address to the Filipino community when he visited Australia in March 2024 that “the Filipino community’s efforts have significantly enhanced the Philippines’ image in Australia and that their hard work, talents, graciousness, and their propensity to support those around them reflect the Filipino character”.
The Ambassador also thanked the overseas Filipinos and dual citizens who participated in the recent Philippine national elections.
Consul Rainier J. Casis of the Philippine Embassy in Canberra provided an overview of the Strategic Partnership of the Philippines and Australia, including the close collaboration in the defense, security, trade and investment sectors and strong people-to-people connections.
Philippine Honorary Consul in Queensland Atty. Sheryll Gabutero briefed the community on the consular services provided by the Philippine Consulate in Brisbane.
Queensland hosts the third largest Filipino migrant community in Australia with over 70,000 Filipinos and Australians of Filipino descent calling Queensland their home.-END
