01 July 2025, Perth - The Western Australian Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED), led by Executive Director for International Engagement Ms. Robyn Robb, provided a briefing for Ambassador Antonio Morales on trade and investment opportunities as part of the Ambassador’s official visit to WA. DEED underscored the state's strategic pivot toward a low-carbon, innovation-driven economy.

DEED outlined its “Diversify WA” framework, which targets growth in renewable hydrogen, critical minerals processing, defence manufacturing, digital health, carbon capture and storage, and sustainable tourism. As a major global exporter of LNG, iron ore, lithium, and gold, WA plays a pivotal role in Australia's economic ties with Asia, including the Philippines.

Ambassador Morales expressed keen interest in expanding bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, mining, agribusiness, education, tourism, and human capital development. With a shared time zone and direct air links, both sides identified strong logistical synergies for trade and people-to-people exchange.

Filipino students remain a vital part of WA’s international education sector, with most pursuing qualifications in healthcare, engineering, IT, and hospitality. WA officials noted opportunities for Filipino professionals in defence manufacturing, advanced mining, and energy infrastructure, as the state prepares to scale up major projects under the AUKUS and hydrogen initiatives.

Looking ahead, DEED confirmed plans to send a ministerial delegation to the Philippines by 2026. Established on 01 July 2025, DEED replaces the former Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI), marking the WA Government’s commitment to energy transition and economic diversification. - END
