28 May 2024, CANBERRA – Ambassador Ma. Hellen De La Vega joined the Philippine-Australian Association of the ACT and the Monaro Region Inc (PAA) and the Kababaihang Rizalista Inc Canberra Chapter (KRI-Canberra) in the celebration of Philippine Heritage Day on 25 May 2024 at the Griffith Neighbourhood Hall.
With the theme, “Bayani: Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal”, the program featured a powerful video presentation prepared by KRI-Canberra on the life of the national hero from his early days in Laguna, to his experiences as a student in Spain and Germany and to his days in exile leading to his execution. The PAA is led by Mr. Joseph Gasendo while KRI-Canberra is led by Ms. Marlene Tucker. This collaboration aims to build awareness on the important contributions of Rizal and to promote Philippine heritage in Canberra.
In her remarks, Ambassador De La Vega discussed how the words and works of Rizal continue to be relevant in particular in light of current challenges. She described Rizal as an overseas Filipino, an international student, a natural and social scientist and an influencer.
Every year, the PAA organizes the Philippine Heritage Day that highlights the rich and proud heritage of the country. The Philippines observes National Heritage Month every month of May. This year’s theme is “Championing Heritage: Capacity Building to Transform Communities.” -- END
