18 June 2024, CANBERRA – Ambassador Ma. Hellen De La Vega joined the Filipino community in Canberra in the gala organized by the Filipino Community Council of the Australian Capital Territory (FCCACT) on 15 June 2024 in celebration of the 126th anniversary of the declaration of the Independence of the Philippines. The Philippines observes its Independence Day on 12 June.

In her remarks, Ambassador De La Vega said, “The Philippines and Australia share deep historical bonds and warm people-to-people ties that helped mold our Strategic Partnership. The Filipino community in this country, at over 400,000 strong, is an anchor of our robust relations and an inspiration to our strong resolve to deepen and broaden bilateral cooperation.”

Federal Member of Parliament Mr. David Smith attended the event and said that Australia has benefited from the growing presence of the Filipino community. He added that the Filipino community does an extraordinary job in bringing people together and therefore in promoting peace.

The event featured cultural performances that highlighted regional dances and tradition and Filipino-Australian talents. The national dress of the Philippines was on full display during the evening with the guests donning Barong Tagalog and other traditional attire.

There are over 7,000 Filipinos and Filipino-Australians in the ACT many of them serving in the Australian public service. The FCCACT is led by its president, Ms. Cecilia Flores. -- END
