His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC, DSC (Retd), Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Mrs. Linda Hurley were the guests of honor of the ASEAN Day Reception organized by the ASEAN Committee in Canberra on 13 August 2019 at Albert Hall, Canberra. The ASEAN Committee in Canberra is comprised of all ten missions of ASEAN Member States in Canberra. In his speech, Governor General Hurley said, “The economic growth and regional stability the region has seen in the past 50+ years, is a credit to ASEAN and its member states’ commitment to multilateral diplomacy. We are conscious that this peace and stability owes much to the efforts of its leaders and the principles of ASEAN.” In his capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Canberra, H.E. Tha Aung Nyun, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar said, “The good progress achieved in dialogue relations between ASEAN and Australia over the past 44 years leads to the successful convening of the ASEAN- Australia Special Summit in Sydney in March 2018, and the adoption of Sydney Declaration. ASEAN welcomes Australia’s enduring support for ASEAN centrality and its commitment to cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms.” More than 300 guests from government, private sector, academe and the leaders of communities attended the event celebrating the 52nd Anniversary of the founding of ASEAN.
