The Philippine Embassy encouraged the Filipino-Australian community to practice bayanihan for the victims of the ferry tragedy involving the collision of the MV St. Thomas Aquinas and the cargo ship Sulpicio Express Siete and those affected by the widespread flooding caused by the monsoon rains and tropical storm Maring .
While 750 have been rescued from the ferry accident of 16 August 2013, the sea disaster has claimed the lives of over 70 people while 65 others remain missing.
Typhoon Maring entered the Philippine area of responsibility on 17 August bringing heavy rains and flooding 88 municipalities and cities in Regions I, III, IV-A, IV-B, and the National Capital Region.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s Situation Report No. 8 of 22 August 2013, a total of 267,551 families or 1,256,508 persons are affected by the disaster.
As of 23 August 2013, casualties numbered sixty-five (65), including 20 deaths, 41 injured and 4 reported missing.
Damage to agriculture and infrastructure was pegged at Php 78.8 million.
