07 March 2025, CANBERRA – Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio A. Morales welcomed Australian National University (ANU) Philippines Institute officials Prof. Bjoern Dressel, Senior Project Advisor Prof. Paul Hutchcroft, Senior Research Fellow Prof. Cleo Calimbahin, Dr. Maria Tanyag, Dr. Merlinda Bobis, Project Officer Ms. Vanessa Geidel, and Policy Impact Officer Ms. Shanice Espiritu-Amador to discuss the future plans and projects of the Institute, which include a seminar series, as well as cultural and community engagements.

In October 2024, the Institute held its Philippines Update which brought together academics and researchers which focused on critical domestic and foreign policy issues against the backdrop of strengthened ties between Australia and the Philippines. For 2025, the Institute will be bringing the next iteration of the Update Conference to Manila.

The establishment of the ANU Philippines Institute was announced during the visit of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to Manila on 08 September 2023, with the goal of promoting Philippines-related research activities, outreach and expertise, and cultivating strong partnerships, linkages and networks between Australian and Philippine academic institutions, policy-makers and relevant interest groups.

From 2023 until 2028, the Institute’s strategic priorities consist of:

  • Pursuing research-led policy engagements to strengthen bilateral relationship between Philippines and Australia
  • Delivering conferences in both (ANU) Australia and the Philippines
  • Providing funding for Filipino researchers and distinguished visitors to travel to Australia
