22 May 2025, SYDNEY - In celebration of Philippines-Australia Friendship Month in May, Ambassador Antonio Morales visited the University of New South Wales (UNSW) on 01 May 2025 to explore avenues for collaboration in transnational education (TNE) and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The visit aimed to further strengthen academic and research cooperation between the Philippines and Australia under the Strategic Partnership.
Ambassador Morales met with senior UNSW officials, including Deputy Dean Industry Engagement, Innovation and Research Professor Ian Gibson, Head of International Relations Ms. Nerida Dalton, Director of the Institute of Global Development and Associate Professor George Varughese, and Industry and Innovation Manager Mr. Quang Ly. Mr. Eduard Alcordo, CEO of FP Paradigm Pty Ltd, a company collaborating with UNSW on a plastics recycling initiative, also participated in the meeting.
The meeting highlighted the vital role of international academic linkages and the value of collaboration among academia, government, and industry in addressing global challenges such as energy security and environmental pollution.
Ambassador Morales also noted the Philippines’ growing student population in Australia and highlighted the role of leading Australian universities like UNSW in providing high-quality education and research opportunities. He welcomed the university’s interest in engaging with Philippine institutions.
UNSW representatives expressed enthusiasm about deepening engagement with the Philippines and shared ongoing projects that align with development priorities in Southeast Asia, including renewable energy, climate change adaptation, digital technology, and public health. - END
