01 July 2025, Perth - Philippine Ambassador Antonio Morales held in-depth discussions with Professor Gordon Flake, CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, and Dr. Kate O’Shaughnessy, Research Director, during a visit to the University of Western Australia on 01 July 2025, to exchange views on enhancing bilateral and regional cooperation.

Professor Flake emphasized that while economic data often underrepresents the depth of the bilateral ties, people-to-people links, particularly the contributions of the Filipino community in Australia’s key industries, are vital to Australia’s growth. He also underscored the two countries’ shared concerns about regional stability, including the need to uphold the rules-based international order and manage complex relations with major powers.

Ambassador Morales highlighted common security challenges both countries face and shared experiences in navigating geopolitical tensions. He emphasized that the Philippines and Australia collaborate closely to enhance resilience, promote stability, and uphold international law, especially under its 2026 ASEAN Chairmanship. The Ambassador noted the Philippines’ candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council for 2027–2028 which underscored commitment to multilateral diplomacy.

With WA’s shipbuilding sector rapidly expanding, Professor Flake identified strong opportunities for the Philippines to play a more active role in the region’s defense industrial base, backed by its skilled maritime workforce and strategic alignment with Australia.

The Perth USAsia Centre, a non-partisan, not-for-profit institution that facilitates dialogue on regional diplomacy, security, and trade, has long been a platform for engaging key stakeholders across Australia, the US, and the Indo-Pacific. - END
