31 August 2023, CANBERRA – Ambassador Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega presented her credentials as Ambassador of the Philippines to Tuvalu to H.E. Reverend Sir Tofiga Vaevalu Falani, Governor General, on 22 August 2023 in Funafuti. The Governor General Congratulated Ambassador De La Vega and expressed his appreciation for the support extended by the Philippines to Tuvalu.
During her visit, Ambassador De La Vega met Prime Minister Kausea Natano, Minister of Justice, Communication and Foreign Affairs Panapasi Nelesone and Minister for Education, Youth and Sports Timi Melei. Ambassador De La Vega described the Philippines as a Pacific country and a maritime and archipelagic nation that shares Tuvalu’s advocacy for stronger international action to combat climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable environmental practices to protect lands and marine resources.
Prime Minister Natano recognized the similar challenges faced by the Philippines and Tuvalu and welcomed enhanced cooperation between the two countries in particular on migration and development and addressing the impact of climate change. Tuvalu is highly vulnerable to sea level rise and has led international efforts to raise awareness on this issue and pursue a more robust international response.
The Ambassador also met the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Communication and Foreign Affairs Dr. Tausi Taupo and Resident Judge Sir John Baptist Muria.
The Philippines is keen to strengthen its relations with Pacific Island Countries and works with Pacific partners through various development cooperation projects. The Philippines is a top export market of Nauru, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Ambassador De La Vega serves as the Ambassador of the Philippines to Australia and Non-resident Ambassador to Nauru, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. -- END
