02 July 2025, Perth - Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio A. Morales called on His Excellency the Honourable Christopher John Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia (WA), at Government House in Perth on 02 July 2025. They reaffirmed the strong and enduring ties between the Philippines and WA, underpinned by a vibrant Filipino community of nearly 40,000 people.
Ambassador Morales expressed appreciation for WA’s warm reception of the Filipino community. He recalled the rich historical connection that dates back to the late 19th century, when Filipino pearl divers settled in Broome and helped establish the state’s pearling industry.
Governor Dawson acknowledged the valuable contributions of Filipinos across WA’s key sectors, including mining, healthcare, hospitality, and skilled trades.
The Ambassador also emphasized growing trade and investment opportunities between the Philippines and WA such as mining, supported by direct flights between Perth and Manila and a shared time zone. WA currently accounts for around 40% of Australia’s total trade with the Philippines.
Western Australia is the fourth State with the largest Filipino population in Australia.- END
