18 December 2023, CANBERRA – The Philippine Embassy joined the Filipino community on the first night of Simbang Gabi on 15 December 2023 at St. Peter Chanel Church in Yarralumla, ACT. The mass was officiated by Father Chris de Souza, Secretary General of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, and Filipino priest Father Anthony Riosa.

Simbang Gabi, also referred to as Misa de Gallo or the "Mass of the Rooster," is usually observed at dawn. This cherished tradition among Filipino Catholics serves as a spiritual preparation for Christmas, honoring the birth of Jesus Christ.

All-Filipino choir Stella Maris lent their voices to the mass. Following the service, the Embassy hosted a fellowship featuring batchoy Tagalog (Tagalog-style pork noodle soup), puto (Filipino rice cake), and pineapple juice.

The Simbang Gabi in Canberra, organized by the Filipino community with the leadership of Filipino priests, is held annually from 15-23 December. -END-
