MELBOURNE, Australia – The Filipino-Australian community in Melbourne commemorated the 121st anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the Philippines on 12 June 2019 with a flag raising ceremony at the Federation Square at the central business district in Melbourne.
In his interview with SBS, Philippine Honorary Consul in Melbourne Felix Pintado underscored the importance of the occasion for Filipinos living in Australia in particular the preservation of the Filipino identity. Consul Pintado said, “For us, it’s more than just independence, it’s more than just freedom. It’s about acknowledging our culture, our heritage, and remembering who we are as Filipinos.”
Premier Dan Andrews of the State of Victoria sent his greetings to the Filipino community and said, “It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable contributions of our Filipino communities. Since the very beginning of our modern nation, and generation after generation since, you’ve helped to make Victoria stronger and more successful.”
The State of Victoria is home to over 70,000 Filipinos. -- END
