04 June 2024, CANBERRA – The Filipino community in Canberra gathered for the Filipino Mass on 2 June 2024 at the St Peter Chanel’s Church to celebrate the 126th anniversary of the declaration of the Independence of the Philippines.

The mass was celebrated by Fr. Luis Viovicente and Fr. Anthony Riosa. Through the leadership of the Filipino Catholic priests, the Filipino Mass is held on the first Sunday of February, April, June, August and October to serve the growing community in Australia’s capital city. The next Filipino Mass will be held on 04 August 2024.

There are several activities being held around Canberra promoting Philippine heritage this month. The Australian National University (ANU) Philippines Institute is hosting a free screening of Hulagway, a documentary produced by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts on endangered Indigenous Philippine languages, on 6 June at the ANU Hedley Bull building. On 9 June, the Eskrima Academy will present a lecture and demonstration on Filipino martial arts by arnis Grand Master William Bernas at the Tuggeranong Community Centre. -- END
