Archbishop Prowse joins Filipino community in Simbang Gabi

Most Reverend Christopher Prowse, Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, was the main celebrant at the first night of Simbang Gabi held in Canberra on 15 December 2021

16 December 2021, CANBERRA – The Simbang Gabi kicked-off at the St. Monica’s Church in Canberra on 15 December 2021. Most Reverend Christopher Prowse, Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, led the Filipino celebration of nine days of Catholic masses in preparation for Christmas. Traditionally held as a dawn mass, Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo is an important hallmark of the celebration of Christmas in the Philippines.

Fr. Luis Viovicente, the parish priest of St. Monica’s who initiated the Simbang Gabi in Canberra, joined Archbishop Prowse in presiding the first night of Simbang Gabi. Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega participated in the liturgy along with other Embassy personnel. Ambassador De La Vega thanked Archbishop Prowse and said, “The Filipino faith and religiosity has lifted many overseas Filipinos from the challenges of the pandemic especially during their time away from family. We are fortunate to have a strong partnership with the religious community in Canberra who are committed to our spiritual growth.” The Filipino choir Stella Maris sang Filipino songs of praise during the mass.

The Simbang Gabi in Canberra is held every 8:00 pm at St. Monica’s Evatt until 23 December 2021. -- END
