06 May 2025, SYDNEY - Ambassador Antonio Morales, joined by Consul General Charmaine Aviquivil and officers from the Philippine Embassy in Canberra and Consulate General in Sydney, welcomed 17 Australia Awards scholars from the Philippines currently pursuing studies at universities across New South Wales.
The scholars, who come from various Philippine government agencies and academic institutions, are enrolled at leading universities including the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Western Sydney University, University of Newcastle, and University of Technology Sydney, among others.
They are undertaking postgraduate studies in fields aligned with the Philippines’ development priorities, such as economics, trade, infrastructure, education, and public policy. Each scholar is expected to develop a plan outlining how they will apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to contribute to national development of the Philippines upon their return.
Ambassador Morales assured the scholars that the Embassy and the Consulates General in Sydney and Melbourne are ready to support them throughout their journey in Australia.
Funded by the Australian Government, the Australia Awards Scholarships aim to build future leaders and promote sustainable development. Since the 1950s, the program has supported over 4,000 Filipino scholars.
Filipinos now represent the fourth-largest international student community in Australia, following China, India, and Nepal. In 2024, approximately 58,800 Filipino students were enrolled across the country, with the highest concentration of around 19,200 based in New South Wales. - END
