Philippines and Australia forge cooperation on cyber and critical technology

12 March 2024, CANBERRA – Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology Brendan Dowling and Ambassador of the Philippines to Australia Ma. Hellen De La Vega signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cyber and Critical Technology Cooperation on 28 February 2024 at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The signing ceremony took place in the margins of the Guest of Government visit of President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr to Canberra on 28 to 29 February 2024. Sharing of information and best practices on cyber and critical technology issues, cyber skills development, the digital economy, and multilateral coordination are the expected outcomes of the MoU. -- END

Philippine and Australian Competition Authorities Strengthen Ties with MOU Signing on Competition Law

12 March 2024, CANBERRA - Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) Chair Michael G. Aguinaldo and Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on the Implementation of Competition Law on 28 February 2024 at the ACCC office in Canberra. The signing ceremony was held in the margins of the Guest of Government Visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to Canberra on 28-29 February 2024. With the commitment to work closer together in areas critical to innovation and economic development, the MOU aims to facilitate the exchange of information between the two countries and foster cooperation on competition regulation including tackling anti-competitive practices and protecting consumer interests. – END

Ambassador De La Vega celebrates Sinulog Festival with Filipino community in Central Coast NSW

24 January 2024, NEW SOUTH WALES – Philippine Ambassador Ma. Hellen De La Vega joined the Filipino community in Central Coast NSW in celebrating the Sinulog Festival on 21 January 2024. The Festival commenced with a mass officiated by Filipino priests, Rev. Fathers Raul Balute, Alex Bernardo and Teody Medina, followed by a procession and Sinulog dances by the community. Hon. David Harris, Minister for the Central Coast NSW of the Parliament of NSW, also participated in the celebration. . Close to 500 attendees were present at the Festival held for the first time at the St. Peter’s Catholic College in Tuggerah.

Inaugural DAFA Cup 2023

14 December 2023, CANBERRA – The Office of the Philippine Defense and Armed Forces Attaché – Australia (ODAFA-AU) organized the inaugural DAFA Cup 2023 on 18 November 2023. Ambassador De La Vega and Senator Birmingham discuss developments in PH-AU relations

01 December 2023, CANBERRA – Upon the invitation of the Senator, Philippine Ambassador to Australia Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega and Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Shadow Foreign Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Senate, met in Parliament on 30 November and discussed the enduring relations of the Philippines and Australia.

The Ambassador briefed Senator Birmingham on the establishment of the Strategic Partnership of the Philippines and Australia and the plan of action that both countries will pursue in particular on new areas of cooperation. The Philippines and Australia are committed to expand maritime cooperation and to advance trade and investment relations. Darwin Honorary Consul General John Rivas receives DepEd Recognition for Exemplary Contributions to Youth Education Program

01 December 2023, NORTHERN TERRITORY - Honorary Consul General Januario John R. Rivas AM of the Philippine Consulate General to Darwin, Northern Territory was awarded a Plaque of Recognition by the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd), Region VI for his outstanding service, commitment and support to DepEd Sagay City, Negros Occidental in the implementation of the Basic Education Learning Continuity and Recovery Plan through various projects and initiatives.

Consul General Rivas has been supporting the delivery of a program for the marginalized and underprivileged youth in the public schools in the northern part of Negros Occidental, Philippines since 2018. His contributions include the strategic donation of essential learning and teaching resources, including reading materials that significantly enhance English and STEM learning experiences, through the support and generosity of the community in Darwin.

Philippine Australia Business Council tackle trade and investment with Australian Parliamentarians

21 November 2023, MANILA - Philippine Australia Business Council (PABC) Chairman Atty. Dennis Quintero, together with PABC members Ted Villanueva and Mark Voltaire Jimenez, met with visiting Australian Parliamentarians Hon Steve Georganas MP, Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth and Member for Adelaide, and Hon Michelle Landry, Deputy Chair of House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources and Member for Capricornia in Manila on 21 November 2023. They discussed collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, resources and business process outsourcing to enhance trade and investment cooperation. Advisory on New Dates of Mobile Consular Mission in Vanuatu, 21-22 October 2023

27 September 2023 - The Embassy of the Philippines in Canberra informs the Filipino community in Vanuatu that the mobile consular mission originally scheduled on 30 September to 01 October 2023 is canceled and will be held instead on 21 to 22 October 2023. The Embassy delegation is not able to proceed to Vanuatu as planned due to the cancellation of flights by Air Vanuatu.

The Mission will serve passport applicants, administer the oath of allegiance to petitioners for dual citizenship who have received approval letters from the Embassy, and conduct overseas voting registration for the 2025 Philippine elections.

July 2023 – The Philippines today commemorates the 7th Anniversary of the Award on the South China Sea Arbitration. An affirmation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its dispute settlement mechanisms, the Award definitively settled the status of historic rights and maritime entitlements in the South China Sea and declared without legal effect claims that exceed entitlements beyond the geographic and substantive limits set by UNCLOS. It is now part of international law.

Philippines Showcases Booming Economic Zones and Investment Prospects at Business Forum

NAURU HEALTH MINISTER MEETS WITH PHILIPPINE OFFICIALS, EXPRESSES DESIRE TO HIRE "BEST IN THE WORLD" PH HEALTH WORKERS

11 May 2023, CANBERRA – First Secretary and Consul General Aian Caringal of the Philippine Embassy in Canberra met with Nauru Minister for Health Hon. Timothy Ika and Secretary for Health Ms. Greta Harris on 2 May 2023 in Nauru.

Both sides discussed health cooperation between the two countries. Minister Ika and Secretary Harris gave an overview of Nauru’s health sector and operations. They also expressed high regard for Filipino health workers and their desire to hire Philippine doctors and nurses whom they praised as best in the world. Consul General Caringal thanked Minister Ika for the generous recognition of Philippine health workers and noted that the Philippine health professionals are indeed well-known for their expertise, work ethic, and caring attitude to patients.

Pasko sa Canberra returns in 2022; over 3,000 guests joined Christmas festival in the Embassy

06 December 2022, CANBERRA – The Embassy of the Philippines in Canberra opened its doors once again to Pasko sa Canberra (Christmas in Canberra) on 4 December 2022 after a two-year pause as a result of the pandemic. Over 3,000 guests visited the Embassy grounds to get their fill of Filipino food and watch the local display of Filipino talent.

Organized by the Filipino Community Council of the Australian Capital Territory (FCC-ACT), Pasko sa Canberra is an annual celebration that signals the start of Christmas festivities in Australia’s capital city. Guests lined-up to buy Filipino and Christmas favorites including lechon (roast whole pig), barbecue, bibingka and puto bumbong (rice cakes). A host of cold Filipino alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks became very popular during the warm day. Local talents from around Canberra and nearby Sydney provided fun and entertainment.
